Congratulations to Joe Karbus, Eric Wynalda and Larry Caplinger on being inducted into the AYSO hall of fame Friday night at the NAGM.
Joe Karbus
Joe Karbus was an early advocate for girls' soccer. At a time when AYSO still did not accept registration of girls, Joe created a girls' soccer program and persuaded his region to register girls. He then succeeded in persuading AYSO's NBOD to open AYSO to girls. Once girls were eligible to register, Joe became AYSO's first director of publicity, and used that pulpit to convince regions throughout AYSO to adopt programs for girls. Many of the great women soccer athletes of the US Women's National Team became soccer players in the first instance because of AYSO programs inspired by Joe.
Eric Wynalda
Eric Wynalda was introduced to soccer as an AYSO player in Region 5 - Westlake Village, Ca. Today Eric helps AYSO as a traveling ambassador and enjoys watching his daughter play soccer. During the years in between, Eric developed into one of Americas most talented soccer players, leading the US Men's National Team into the Olympic and World Cup competitions. Eric was capped 106 times for the national team from 1990 through 2000 and holds the team scoring record with 364 goals.
Larry Caplinger
Larry Caplinger had been dedicated to AYSO since stepping on the field for the first time in 1974. First as a new volunteer, then a regional commissioner, then an are director, then a section director, and then our National Director of Tournaments. Larry applied his vast AYSO experiences to bring our tournaments from chaos to order. Today, AYSO tournaments form an environment for supplemental soccer experience conforming to AYSO philosophies. The third generation of the Caplinger family is now enjoying AYSO - Larry's two sons grew up in AYSO and his grandchildren now play in Regions 77 and 310.
