AYSO Section 7 History

Section 7 was begun back on September 3, 1974 in Hawaii Kai, which is now a part of Diamond Head Region 48. American Samoa Region 1272 was the last region to join our AYSO ohana.

Six other regions joined AYSO Section 7 in the 1970s Kailua Region 100 (January 26, 1976), Kaneohe Region 113 (June 21, 1976), Aiea Region 118 (November 29, 1976), Mililani Region 119 (November 29, 1976), Honolulu Region 178 (March 23, 1978), and Hickam Region 188 (May 30, 1978).

The decade of the 80s began with two regions joining the local AYSO organization. Leeward Region 269 joined on June 6, 1980. Hilo Region 274 became the first neighbor island region on August 29, 1980.

Before any of our Hawaii regions were a part of Section 7, they were part of Section 4 and Section12. They formed their own Section 7 in August of 1984. Walter Wong was the first Section Director (August 1984-May 1988). Gordon Matsuoka was Section Director from May 1988-August 1989. Pat Takahashi was Section Director from August 1989-May 1995. Max Sword has held that position till 2001. Mark Stewart is the present Section Director.

Six more regions joined Section 7 in the 1980s. Those regions were North Shore Region 289 (January 5, 1981), Laie region 358 (May 28, 1982), Pearl City Region 381 (January 21, 1983), North Hawaii Region 403 (August 2, 1983), Kona Region 527 (March 22, 1986), and Central Maui Region 601 (May 25, 1987).

Puna Region 738 joined on March 17, 1990. West Oahu Region 769 was formed on January 26, 1991, after Leeward Region 269 split into two regions.

Nine more regions joined our AYSO ohana in the 1990s: Upcountry Maui Region 818 (January 18, 1992), West Maui Region 892 (May 28, 1993), Kihei Region 895 (May 28, 1993), West Kauai Region 940 (March 3, 1994), East Kauai Region 941 (March 3, 1994), Molokai Region 985 (August 15, 1994), Kau Region 1012 (October 26, 1994), Paneawa Region 1092 (February 22, 1996), and Lanai Region 1147 (October 25, 1996).
