Coronavirus Update and Prevention Tips

The following information is being updated as new information regarding COVID-19 becomes available.

We understand your concern in light of the Coronavirus outbreak and want you to know that AYSO is assessing the situation in its entirety to determine the best-informed course of action for our players, volunteers and families.

This is a dynamic and fluid situation and appreciate your patience and understanding. The safety and well-being of our membership is of the highest priority, so in light of the California Department of Public Health’s recommendation that gatherings of 250 or more be postponed or cancelled, AYSO has taking the following actions regarding upcoming events and is providing the following recommendations for your local events.

We have cancelled the Western States Games and the Section 1/10/11 EXPO and are evaluating other AYSO run events as information unfolds.

We recommend that if you have tournaments or large special events scheduled, you consider postponing them to April or May respectively.

We understand that this creates a bit of uncertainty but please let your families know that we are monitoring the situation daily and will have a recommended action plan for your programs in short order.

As the number of Coronavirus cases identified has been growing, we wanted to give you some best practices, tips and resources to keep you updated and well. Our main priority is the well-being of families, so as you are starting your seasons, please know that AYSO is keeping abreast of all updates related to the outbreak. To that point, we recommend that you stay in contact with our office as well as your local and state departments of Public Health with further questions. Our goal is to provide all members with timely and relevant information on Coronavirus.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent the Coronavirus. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed. Everyday preventive actions should be taken, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow the CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including Coronavirus.
    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms to help prevent the spread of the disease.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

For AYSO specific events, we also recommend that instead of end of game handshakes, you do fist bumps or elbow to elbow and please remind your players not to share their water bottles or snacks with each other.

We suggest that there be a protocol for determining whether to cancel or restrict local AYSO activities.  Where there is a clear government action taken, such as in New Rochelle, New York, immediate action is warranted.  In all other situations, Regions and Areas with concerns should consult their respective Area or Section Director, prior to taking unilateral action.  Such action may create a cascade of unintended consequences.
